Who are Teaching Artists?

A unique hybrid professional, the Teaching Artist is both professional artist and qualifed educator.  Many of us blaze our own paths for professional development.  We are creative, innovative practitioners who resist codification and classification, but embrace professional standards for ourselves and our partners--teachers, social workers, parents, administrators, youth workers, studnets from pre-K through graduate school.  We integrate high quality art-making and learning through the arts with other core disciplines, and guide people of all ages and all backgrounds to reach for emotional, intellectural, psychological, physical and spiritual creativity.

What is TAO?

Teaching Artists Organized is a membership organization established by a group of founding arts and education organizations in 2004--Cal Shakes, Berkeley Rep, Creative Education Institute (formerly at the Julia Morgan Center for the Arts), Theatre Bay Area, Dancers Group, Community Network for Youth Development, and a group of individual artists.  With fiscal sponsorship from Community Initiatives, we begn operating as a not-for-profit advisory in 2008 and now, in 2010, we have our first regular staff members and a leadership executive committee moving us forward.

Our Mission:  TAO is a collaborative of organizations and individuals committed to the professionalization of our unique and emerging field.  Guided by our members and advisors, we offer services and supports to address overarching challenges to our field, working
> to be recognized as equally valued partners with our education and community parnters
> to meet the logistical challenges of working in our field, and
> to support and celebrate the creative practice inherent in our work.
